ISO 27001 Compliance: The Complete Guide for AI-Native Teams

Written by: Rakesh Sharma, Packets / Reviewed by: Packets / Last reviewed:

Enterprise security reviews rarely stall on a missing logo. They stall when an AI-native team cannot show how production data, model pipelines, and vendors sit inside a living information security management system. That is the practical meaning of iso 27001 compliance: not a binder, but a scoped ISMS an accredited auditor can test.

Packets works with Indian B2B SaaS companies, typically 20 to 200 people, selling into US and EU accounts without a dedicated security hire. Buyers still ask for iso 27001 compliance next to AI questionnaires. A software-only checklist does not close that gap. A named specialist who owns implementation does.

What iso 27001 compliance actually covers

ISO/IEC 27001 is the international standard for an information security management system. The current edition is ISO/IEC 27001:2022. It is certifiable through an accredited certification body. Packets does not issue that certificate and does not sign the audit opinion. Management makes the representations; the auditor issues the opinion.

iso 27001 compliance is built on Clauses 4 through 10: context, leadership, planning, support, operation, performance evaluation, and improvement. Annex A then lists 93 reference controls in four themes: organizational, people, physical, and technological. You select controls from a risk assessment. Exclusions go in the Statement of Applicability with a written justification. ISO/IEC 27002 is implementation guidance. You certify against 27001, not 27002.

Read the official standard overview from ISO on ISO/IEC 27001 before you copy a generic controls spreadsheet. The spreadsheet is not the ISMS.

Why AI product companies get this questionnaire first

If you train, host, or call models on customer data, procurement treats the AI stack as an information system. Prompt logs, evaluation sets, vector stores, and GPU vendors all become assets. iso 27001 compliance asks whether those assets are inventoried, access-controlled, logged, backed up, and included in incident response. It does not, by itself, answer fairness, model impact, or AI-specific lifecycle governance. That is AI governance and ISO/IEC 42001, covered later in this guide.

The deal-stall pattern is familiar. A US or EU security questionnaire asks for the Statement of Applicability, the last internal audit, and evidence that production access is reviewed. The founder forwards a policy pack from a tool. Reviewers ask who performed the risk assessment and who will sit with the auditor. iso 27001 compliance work that nobody owns dies in that thread.

What to put in place before you talk to a certification body

Start with scope. Write which products, cloud accounts, offices, and subprocessors sit inside the ISMS, and which sit outside. Vague scope is how iso 27001 compliance projects drag. If the AI inference path is in production for enterprise customers, it belongs in scope.

Run a real risk assessment, not a template with the company name swapped. Tie risks to threats against confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the assets you listed. Treat model weights, training snapshots, and prompt stores as information assets. Then draft the Statement of Applicability: every Annex A control included or excluded, with status and owner.

Stand up the operating cadence next: access reviews, change records, backup tests, vendor due diligence, incident intake, and internal audit. These are the artifacts iso 27001 compliance auditors sample. A platform can store them. It cannot invent owners or attend the closing meeting.

  • Scope statement and asset inventory that include AI pipelines.
  • Risk assessment and risk treatment plan with named owners.
  • Statement of Applicability mapped to ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Annex A.
  • Internal audit and management review records before stage 2.

ISO 27001 and ISO 42001 are complementary

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the AI management system standard. It shares the same high-level clause structure as ISO 27001, which is why teams with an ISMS already have a spine for policy, audit, and management review. It does not replace iso 27001 compliance. 27001 protects information. 42001 governs how AI systems are designed, evaluated, deployed, and retired, including impact on people.

Enterprise buyers selling into the EU increasingly pair security evidence with AI Act-style questions. If your product is an AI system, plan iso 27001 compliance and an AIMS as one program with two control catalogs, not two consultancies that never talk. See Packets' ISO 27001 solution page and SOC 2 vs ISO 27001 comparison when US customers also ask for a SOC report. This hub stays on the ISMS. Dedicated SOC 2 cluster posts are out of scope here on purpose.

ISO's page on the AI management system is ISO/IEC 42001. Use it as a source, not as marketing copy.

How Packets implements iso 27001 compliance without a full-time hire

Packets is compliance automation with a person attached. Agents handle volume: evidence collection, control mapping, questionnaire drafts, vendor chasing. A named Compliance Lead is accountable for the ISMS from week one: scope, risk workshop, SoA, auditor coordination, and the awkward exceptions. That is implementation, not a dashboard login.

A tool-only path looks cheaper until the first customer asks who will walk the auditor through production access for the model service. A consultant-only path produces slides and leaves the team to operate the system after the engagement. Packets is built for the middle: compliance implementation plus the platform, for teams that still have to ship product.

We do not claim Packets is certified to ISO 27001 in this article. Check Packets security for current status. We also do not invent case studies. If Scrut or another platform is a better fit for a tool-first buyer, say so and point to Packets vs Scrut.

Frequently asked questions

Is iso 27001 compliance the same as passing a customer security questionnaire?

No. Questionnaires are a sales artifact. iso 27001 compliance is a management system an accredited body can certify. You can fail a questionnaire with a certificate if the report scope excludes the product the buyer uses. You can also pass early questionnaires while the ISMS is still immature. Treat both as workstreams.

Do we need ISO 42001 before iso 27001 compliance?

Usually no. Most AI-native teams still need an ISMS first because buyers and insurers ask for information security. Add 42001 when AI systems are material to the product and customers start asking about model governance, not just encryption and access control.

Can we exclude the AI stack from ISMS scope?

You can exclude it in writing. You will then spend the next year explaining why the thing that processes customer data is out of scope. For enterprise AI products, exclusion is rarely a serious iso 27001 compliance strategy.

How long does iso 27001 compliance take for a 50-person SaaS team?

It depends on existing access control, vendor mess, and whether production is already logged. Packets quotes programs with a named lead rather than a generic timeline slogan. The constraint is operating the system, not generating policies.
