Compliance Automation: How Modern Programs Actually Run
Written by: Rakesh Sharma, Packets / Reviewed by: Packets / Last reviewed:
Compliance automation is not a synonym for generating policies. It is the operating system that collects evidence, assigns owners, and keeps an ISMS and an AIMS alive after the kickoff workshop. AI-native teams need that system because questionnaires, vendors, and model changes do not pause for a certification date.
Packets' version of compliance automation is agents on volume plus a named specialist accountable for implementation. That is the opposite of a login that emails you leftover controls with nobody to run the workshop. It is still work. The point is that the work has an owner.
What compliance automation should include
At minimum: a scoped system description, control mapping to ISO/IEC 27001:2022, a place for ISO 42001 AI controls when models are in production, vendor records, access reviews, incident intake, and a questionnaire workflow that cites evidence instead of inventing answers. If privacy laws apply, rights-request handling belongs in the same cadence, not a side spreadsheet.
GRC software can host those objects. Compliance automation that stops at hosting leaves founders doing auditor translation at midnight. Implementation is the missing layer: someone who will change production access, write the SoA, and tell you when a control is theater.
See compliance management, evidence automation, and policy management for how Packets splits those jobs. This hub is about the operating model, not a feature tour.
ISO 27001, ISO 42001, and privacy in one cadence
Do not run three calendars. Internal audit, management review, and vendor reassessment can cover information security and AI governance in one sitting if the agenda is explicit. Impact assessments for AI systems are extra work ISO 27001 never asked for; put them on the same calendar anyway so compliance automation does not fork into "security people" and "AI people" who never share logs.
Privacy operations (GDPR, DPDP, CCPA, HIPAA where triggered) generate tickets. Those tickets should hit the same owner graph as access reviews. An ai-shaped program that cannot delete a user's prompts is not automation. It is a demo.
Official standards remain the source for control catalogs: ISO 27001 and ISO 42001. Regulation stays regulation. Compliance automation does not absorb the EU AI Act into a checkbox labeled "done."
Tool-only vs Packets
A tool-only path is rational if you already have a GRC function. Most 20 to 200 person teams do not. They buy software, miss the first surveillance period, and re-open the same questionnaire gaps. Packets puts a Compliance Lead in the work: compliance implementation and expert advisory.
When a software-centric competitor is the alternative, compare on implementation ownership, not on who listed more integrations. Packets vs Scrut is the honest page for that. We still do not certify you, and we still do not publish on your behalf.
This sprint is not a SOC 2 content track. US enterprise may still want a SOC report. Compliance automation should be able to feed that attestation later without rebuilding the company. For now the spine is ISO 27001 plus ISO 42001 plus the privacy laws you already triggered.
What "continuous" actually means month to month
- Access recertification for production and for model consoles.
- Vendor re-checks when you add an LLM or a GPU cloud.
- Sampling evidence so the auditor is not the first reader.
- Change records when you ship a new agent path.
That list is boring on purpose. Compliance automation that only produces launch graphics fails the second quarter. If you want a baseline against this list, take the free audit score.
Frequently asked questions
Is compliance automation the same as outsourcing the CISO?
No. Management still owns the ISMS and AIMS. Packets supplies implementation capacity. You still sign the representations.
Can compliance automation replace ISO 42001 work?
It can collect 42001 evidence. It cannot skip impact assessment or invent human oversight you do not have.
Will a platform alone get us certified?
No. Certification bodies audit your organization. Software is a control environment, not the auditee.
How do we start this week?
Name one owner. Inventory systems including AI. Pick ISO 27001 as the spine unless a contract already forces a different first move. Then contact Packets if you want that owner to be a specialist rather than a rotating founder duty.
